Maynooth Open Application Form

The Maynooth University Debating Open will be taking place on Saturday November 15th 2014. The competition will take place on MaynoothUniversity’s campus which has been a centre of discussion and debate since 1795 situated in Ireland’s only University town.

The competition takes place in the British Parliamentary style, the style used in the World University Debating Championships. There will be 4 rounds of 7-minute speeches, with the top 8 teams breaking to semi-finals, with those eventually been whittled down to a final 4 who will compete in the Grand Final. The Final and Black Tie Gala will be held in The Glenroyal Hotel.

Maynooth University Literary & Debating Society invite teams from all societies which encourage discussion and debate to our campus this November to help re-launch the Maynooth Open onto the Irish debating calendar.

The Maynooth Open won’t just be a fantastic opportunity to compete with some of Ireland’s best debating talent and hone your skills, it’s also an occasion to socialise and connect with your fellow debaters from around the country.

Discounted rates for rooms in the Glenroyal Hotel (€95 twin room) and on campus (rates TBC) are available, and Crash will be available thanks to many of the more enthusiastic members of our society. And we can’t forget that there will be three square meals, a late bar after the final, and a few perks that we’re still working on.

Our Chief Adjudicators for this year’s competition are:

Catherine Murphy

Sally Rooney

Registration opens on October 6th and closes on November 7th 2014. Registration is capped at 40 teams so remember to register early to avoid disappointment. The cost per team is €40 and Judge registration is free. We would encourage that for every team your society sends that you also send a judge.

Don’t forget to click “Attend” on our Facebook event.
