About BICS
Constituted in 1995, the Board of Irish College Societies is a national organisation dedicated to providing a national forum for student societies in Ireland’s third-level institutes.
Over the last 30 years, BICS has worked to promote interest in and recognition for the activities of third-level societies, including the establishment of the annual National Society Awards, a highlight of the academic calendar for student leaders across the country.
BICS also acts as a network and resource exchange for societies staff, providing a platform where staff can exchange ideas, share best practices, and access support from colleagues in other institutes.
Student societies are a path to increased engagement and an overall better higher education experience, helping students to gain real-world skills beyond the lecture hall, and building networks and friendships that will last a lifetime.
Membership of the Board of Irish College Societies is open to any third-level institution on the island of Ireland.

Governance Structure
The Board of Irish College Societies comprises of a Board, an Executive, and where applicable, working groups created from within the Executive.
The Board
The Board is the primary decision-making body of BICS. The Board is comprised of two representatives from each member institution:
- One staff member (or nominee), ideally a member of the society administration in that institution
- One student member, ideally the duly elected/appointed BICS society representative in that institution.
The Executive is subject to any decision made by the Board, and only members of the Board are eligible to be elected to positions on the Executive.
The Executive
The Executive is the elected acting body of BICS, with plenary powers between meetings of the Board.
The Executive is comprised of, subject to election, a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, Communications Officer, four staff representatives and four student representatives.
There are four working groups within the Executive to which members can be appointed:
- Awards
- Sponsorship and Resources
- Membership Development
- Communications
Additional working groups or project coordinators may be established by the Board, or the Executive with Board approval, where required to achieve the aims of BICS.
